I spent the last few days on a creative kick. My imagination was at an all time high, which led to a spike in my productivity. At first, this surplus of ideas was exciting, but soon it became overwhelming. To fix this dilemma, I started a journal. The sections within this journal were character ideas, end goals, punchlines/one liners, staging techniques, and relationship objectives. Every time I came up with something new, I took detailed notes of it so that when the time comes to write my play, all my thoughts are organized and ready to go.
I needed more opinions on what exactly my end goal and process would consist of, so I went online to find some research papers, articles, and essays. Some were very helpful, others were on the more aggravating side. Nonetheless, one article led me to the next, and then the next, and eventually I was led down a rabbit hole of information. I was so engrossed in peoples theories and ideas, that I spent hours upon hours taking notes and putting in my own two sense.
Finally, I had an idea that I thought I could run with. This led me to start a spreadsheet to organize all of my ideas for the comedy play that I will be writing. Once I had my premise, the ideas just kept flowing. I made a character analysis chart, because I cannot start writing dialogue that is authentic to the characters, if I do not truly know the characters inside and out. Then, I began my scene breakdown to figure out the main structure of the show. This was important groundwork to lay in order to get my project on its feet. Now I can work on taking my idea and making it a reality.
