Getting Some Guidance

This week was pretty eye opening for me. I conducted an interview with a college student on Friday, and it was an incredible experience. I had prepared some questions for her: some of which I felt would help me in the future, and others that I knew I needed to work on currently. She was able to answer all my questions in detail. She was honest, and did not sugarcoat anything, yet still driven and excited about her, and my, future. I was able to get a good grasp of the next few years ahead of me from this interview. I could picture myself taking classes that I love in a university full of students with just as much passion as myself. I got tons of good advice about auditioning for schools, pursuing projects, and making connections.

This interview really got me thinking about how much grit and persistence it takes to be in a creative field. She explained to me how she cannot have a full-time job in case an audition comes up. She expressed how the schedules are both more and less flexible in that a person must be prepared to change their plans up last minute if an opportunity presents itself. I admit that all of this information overwhelmed me and made me a bit nervous about my own future. But hearing her discuss her goals with such a fervor and passion reaffirmed my belief that I must pursue my dream. I have big goals in life, but I am confident that I can make them happen if I just keep my mind open and engaged. I learned through this interview that I should not have a set in stone plan for every step of my creative journey. Things may not go the way I originally planned, and that is okay. I need to be able to embrace new opportunities and challenges. I need to stick to my strengths to overcome my weaknesses. Every step I take towards my dream has purpose, even if it may not seem so at the time.
