Insight from my Interview

I recently had my very first in-person interview. While zoom interviews have been very informative, I also just really appreciated being able to talk to somebody face to face. I met with the creative director of Outcry Youth Theatre who also happens to be a playwright. It was very enlightening to talk to a person who had to make it in the industry. I knew that starting from the bottom and working your way up would be difficult, but I did not know just how many side jobs a creative can go through while trying to make a name for themselves. In a previous interview, I had learned that it is important to trust and carry your name with pride as a person in a creative field, after a person’s name is all they have both before and after success in their field. In this recent interview, I discovered that an unsteady field gives a person a lot of freedom but also poses many limitations. The schedule may be more flexible and versatile, but it also is more jam packed with side jobs to pay the bills. It also is very difficult to become recognized as a creative, as there are so many with just as much talent. However, it is not talent that gets people far, it is resilience, drive, and ambition. I need to be prepared to deal with rejection, negative reviews, and criticism. It is just much more subjective than other fields in that there is not always one “cure” or answer for a problem. Sometimes it is more important to think creatively and originally. There is absolutely no routine as a creative.
